  • Ruben Carbajal: The Baddest Kid on Emerson

Destroying myths is a dangerous thing. Short, brutal, and arresting, I was intrigued at the deeper resonances that ripple from this fragile moment when legend meets reality. The dialogue is crisp and crackles from the page--not only would I love to see this produced I'd also be interested in spending more time in this hardscrabble neighborhood.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Christmas Carol: Fury Road

The razor-sharp barbs of Emily McClain's monologue will give just the perfect amount of caustic humor to a holiday show. Part of the fun is that nearly every theatre-lover will have suffered through the kind of train-wreck production that Christine is facing, and there's a relief and possibly healing for the audience to know they're in the hands of a much more talented playwright. Funny stuff!

  • Ruben Carbajal: Earth People (a one-minute play)

Another heartfelt, one-minute poem from the prolific and eminently humane, Matthew Weaver.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Clasp

Without giving away too much, all I really can think of saying is: this is a very stirring and beautifully-rendered short play. To me, this is a perfect encapsulation of the pandemic. This would be a stellar selection for an evening of Covid-19 related plays, but Clasp also speaks to issues that go far beyond this moment.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Pussygrabber

The personal and political are masterfully fused in this visceral, raw, and undeniably powerful piece of writing. This glimpse into a longer work is compelling and promises to be an important document of the horror we're all grappling with. Watch this space!

  • Ruben Carbajal: My Pregnant Brother-in-Law

There's a lot of warmth and depth infused in this short and very well-crafted monologue. It's like spending time with a good friend. Leaves you wanting to spend more time with Liz and her growing family.

  • Ruben Carbajal: THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING

The stakes couldn't be higher in this thoughtful and moving piece of sci-fi theatre. With minimal elements, BEGINNING expands far beyond its short running time. It has a lot to say about not only the fate of humanity, but the importance of human connection.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Two Girls

Lean, incisive and razor-sharp. This is an intense and lyrical piece full of understated, yet powerful theatricality. Sure to make an impact.

  • Ruben Carbajal: Safe Distance

Smart, measured, and expertly structured, Costa's play combines a meet-cute with a ghost story to create a workplace play that uses a firm grasp of naturalism to deliver moving, otherwordly reveal. Even if you know it's a ghost story going in, there's a remarkable tension in waiting for the shoe to drop. Favorably brings to mind Pinter's Victoria Station, one of my favorite short plays!

  • Ruben Carbajal: Uisce Beathe

I was happily introduced to UISCE BREATHE during a Theatre Unmasked reading. This Choose Your Own Adventure panto zooms closely into a seemingly mundane moment and turns it into an epic battle. It's highly relatable, full of good humor and a lot of fun.
