Recommendations of Fountains of Youth

  • Nick Malakhow: Fountains of Youth

I just loved how this play worked structurally--weaving back and forth in time while simultaneously always charging forward from a narrative/mystery perspective. Additionally, the play is populated by a dynamic group of deftly-rendered characters whose voices are all crystal clear and whose relationship dynamics amplify the stakes of the mystery and each character's relationship to Moose. I'm excited to follow this play's developmental trajectory!

  • Premiere Stages at Kean University: Fountains of Youth

Premiere Stages, the professional Equity theatre company in residence at Kean University, is pleased to recognize Fountains of Youth as a Semi-Finalist for the 2025 Premiere Play Festival. Fountains of Youth rose through a competitive selection conducted by Premiere staff and an external panel of professionals to become distinguished among 805 submissions. The panel was moved by how the play unapologetically looks at the lives of five gay men of color. Our congratulations and thanks to Kareem.

    Devastating. Lush language. Heartbreaking.

This play is beautifully crafted. Yes, the characters are alive and vibrant, the dialogue is compelling, and the subject both important and little-known. The writing is gorgeous, but it’s more than that. It’s a level of nuance and the playwright’s use of layering that makes this an extraordinary read.

  • Andrew Rosendorf: Fountains of Youth

Moving fluidly through time, the story slowly unfolds the secrets binding this close knit group of friends. You might come for the mystery but you stay for the keenly observed characters yearning for companionship and love in a world that sees you as less than. As with every play of Kareem's, his voice sears through and is telling stories that are missing on the American stage.

  • Shaun Leisher: Fountains of Youth

Part thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat, part ensemble piece about the importance of community. Loved these characters and how they grow throughout this piece. Loved how time is played with here as we get to see this friendship evolve. A dedication to those impacted by anti-gay hate that I'll be thinking about for a long time. Would love to see this produced. Amazing roles for MENASA actors.
