Stockade

by Andrew Rosendorf

Five years after the end of WWII, a group of gay soldiers gather for a reunion of sorts on Fire Island—and are met by an outsider with a surprise that will cause them to question whether history is best left in the past. At a time when “security risk” was government code for “homosexual,” it will take courage to step out of the shadows as each confronts their present and future.

A searing and intelligent look at a time that would appear to have been looked at before, but with a unique perspective that offers a much more insightful look. I love Rosendorf's attention to detail when it comes to the inner lives of his characters. It offers an opportunity to actors and artists that I think few plays do.

A play that leaves you disquieted, moved, and deeply affected, Andrew Rosendorf has crafted a tremendously beautiful work about a perspective that has been too long swept under the rug and forgotten by the powerful whom it inconveniences. This play is a defiant, necessary addition to the American canon, documenting--witnessing--a reality that demands remembrance and seizes it unapologetically. Produce this everywhere and see this play not just as history but as a warning of what's at stake now.

I am so in awe of this play. A play about homosexuals that fought for their country and now are fighting back home to be who they truly are. This is a play about people in American history that do not get talked about. People in American history that those in power are trying to erase from the record books. This is a play that deserves to be in the conversation of the greats of American drama. A play that can change lives. I loved this play and need to see it produced yesterday.
